The Hoops' lead had been cut to two points by Swansea's 3-0 lunchtime win over Leeds and Neil Warnock's side were held for 41 minutes by Boro.

Helguson then opened the scoring when he slotted home a left-footed shot from Adel Taarabt's pass. He got his second with half an hour remaining with a header before Taarabt converted a penalty after he had been fouled by Merouane Zemmama.

Scott Sinclair bagged a brace as Swansea strengthened their grip on an automatic promotion place following their comfortable victory over Leeds.

Sinclair broke the deadlock following good link-up play with Luke Moore. The visitors were then denied a clear-cut penalty and Davide Somma saw his header come back off the bar.

The Leeds striker was made to regret his miss when Sinclair doubled Swansea's advantage from the spot and Moore wrapped up Swansea's fourth consecutive win.

Cardiff remain third after a 2-0 win at Hull. Michael Chopra put the Bluebirds ahead midway through the second half when he was left unmarked to head home before Jay Emmanuel-Thomas secured victory in the last minute.

Norwich leapfrog Nottingham Forest into fourth after a 2-0 win at Barnsley. Andrew Crofts gave the Canaries a deserved lead when he gave goalkeeper Luke Steele no chance with a header into the top left-hand corner of the goal in the 33rd minute.

Crofts got his second five minutes before the break with a left-footed shot from 20 yards.

Forest drop to fifth after a 0-0 draw at Millwall.
