West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur: Preview

24 September 2010 20:22
Thomas Hitzlsperger will not make his West Ham debut in Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash with Tottenham.

It had been hoped the German would have recovered from a thigh injury but he remains sidelined along with long-term absentees Zavon Hines, Jack Collison and Peter Kurucz (all knee).

Valon Behrami (knee) could return after missing the midweek Carling Cup win over Sunderland while Tal Ben-Haim is back in the squad after missing last Saturday's draw with Stoke to observe the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.

Under-pressure goalkeeper Robert Green should retain his place in the side despite making several high-profile errors in recent weeks.

The former Norwich stopper, going into the season on the back of a disastrous World Cup campaign,  has been out of sorts throughout so far this term.

However, manager Avram Grant has give the 30-year-old a vote of confidence, insisting he will put his problems behind him and go on to have a successful season.

"Every player has their good days and their bad days," he said.  "I don't know of one player who is good all the time. It's especially bad with goalkeepers because everyone is watching but after five games I don't want people to make a judgement about Robert Green.

"I have a feeling that we will look back at the end of the season and say he had a good year."

Luka Modric returns to the Tottenham squad as Harry Redknapp seeks to pile further misery on former club West Ham at Upton Park.

The Croatian midfielder missed Spurs' last three outings due to a foot injury but is available along with Rafael van der Vaart and Vedran Corluka, who have overcome groin and back injuries respectively.

Heurelho Gomes has failed to recover from a groin injury while doubts remain over Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who is carrying a knee injury.

Ledley King is likely to be rested ahead of next week's Champions League tie with FC Twente while Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton are likely to retain their places in the starting XI after impressing against Wolves last week.

Redknapp has urged West Ham to stand by under-fire manager Grant.

The Hammers are rooted to the foot of the table after a dismal start which has seen them pick up only one point from five matches.

Despite last week's 1-1 draw at Stoke, and public votes of confidence from club chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan, pressure is still on the Israeli, who signed a four-year contract to succeed Gianfranco Zola this summer.

Failure to take anything from a hotly-contested derby against the Hammers' bitter local rivals Spurs will only add further questions about Grant's future at the club.

Spurs boss Redknapp, who worked alongside Grant during his time at Portsmouth, is convinced that the 55-year-old is the man to drag his former club out of the relegation zone.

"I don't see why you'd give someone a job and then consider letting them go after three or four weeks," said Redknapp.

"He has only just got there. That doesn't make sense. I'm sure he will do a good job there.

"I think he's there for the long-term. He'll do a good job there if he's given time."
