50 Players to Watch at the World Cup - No 23 Diego Forlan

11 May 2010 11:13

With all focus on England today, it would be easy to forget about the other players at this year's World Cup. But we continue our 50 players to watch in South Africa with Diego Forlan of Uruguay at 23.

Name: Diego Forlan

Age: 31

Club: Atletico Madrid

International Caps: 61

International Goals: 23

Two tournaments ago, Diego Forlan was regarded as a bit of a laughing stock, having joined Manchester United in January and contributed absolutely nothing.

Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage that year and since then, Forlan hasn't had the stage to prove everybody wrong.

Dubbed Diego Forlorn by some people after a goal-shy spell in England, he still managed to gain a cult following at Old Trafford, mainly helped by his tendency to grab those rare goals against Liverpool.

However, since his transfer to Villarreal in 2004, he has been regarded as one of the world's deadliest strikers.

Forlan won the Pichichi (Top Goal Scorer) in his first season in Spain and took that honour again last season, leading the way for Atletico Madrid this time around with a stunning return of 32 goals in 33 matches.

Twice a Golden Boot winner, Forlan notched seven goals in qualifying and forms a very dangerous partnership with Ajax striker, Luis Suarez. If people don't take him seriously now, they will be in for a big shock.
