50 players to watch at the World Cup - No 29 John Terry

Football.co.uk continues its countdown of players to watch at this year's World Cup, with a look at England's John Terry.

Name: John Terry
Age: 29
Club: Chelsea
International Caps: 59
International Goals: 6

Raised in the famous Senrab youth side, famous for producing England internationals such Sol Campbell and Jermain Defoe, John Terry has become a defensive rock for both club and country over the past decade.

One of few players to make the jump from Chelsea youth team to the first-team, he was mentored by French World Cup winning defender, Marcel Desailly and subsequently took over the captain's armband upon Desailly's departure.

He has since gone on to become the defensive mainstay for both Chelsea and England, captaining both until recent allegations regarding his private life saw him stripped of England's captaincy, ending his three-and-a-half year hold over the armband.

Having been named in the All-Star XI at the last World Cup (the only English player to do so), Terry has remained one of the first names on the England team-sheet with some solid defensive displays. Described as a "man's man" by Chelsea and England colleague, Frank Lampard, Terry also possesses an attacking threat from set-pieces, with his aerial prowess a notable strength of his game, whilst some recent goals suggest a certain finesse in his abilities with a football.

However, it is his 'never-say-die' attitude that has won him plaudits throughout the country and he looks set to lead England into the finals, armband or no armband.
