The Red Devils hardly got out of the blocks on Sunday as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat with Rio Ferdinand coming under more criticism after allowing Fernando Torres to skip through to smash Liverpool into a second half lead.

Media rumours suggest the England international may be dropped by manager Alex Ferguson ahead of the game.

Owen Hargreaves is nearing a return for United following a long-term knee injury and Wayne Rooney is expected to play despite his wife being heavily pregnant and due to give birth before the end of the month.

Rovers have had to deal with a swin flu outbreak this week after Christopher Samba and David Dunn contracted the strain. Several backroom staff members have also been suffering from the highly contagious virus.

Pascal Chimbonda (calf) and Vince Grella (thigh) are struggling to be fit for the clash at Old Trafford.

Blackburn sit just two points above the relegation places and the flu outbreak has proved to come along at a bad time.

They themselves will be down in the dumps following their 5-0 thrashing at Chelsea last week and they will not be expected to grab a result in Manchester.

Allardyce can welcome back young striker Franco Di Santo, who is on-loan from Chelsea, after his parent club refused him permission to feature last week.

In February, United edged out Rovers 2-1 at Old Trafford with the now departed Cristiano Ronaldo grabbing the winner on the hour.

Wayne Rooney had opened the scoring midway through the first half before Roque Santa Cruz, now of Manchester City, levelled soon after.
