The S24 Preview: Southend United v Barnet
Not up the pub yet? Well, wherever you are settle down with S24's Boxing Day preview of Shrimpers v Bees at Roots Hall on Sunday, December 27th; kick-off 13.00. v Check out the weather for all the holiday gameshttp://uk.weather.com/weather/10day-Southend-on-Sea-UKXX1314http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/4274?&search=crewe&itemsPerPage=10®ion=ukhttp://uk.weather.com/weather/10day-Oxford-UKXX0106Travel News for ExilesKeep your eyes on the trains here:www.southendunited-mad.co.uk/feat/edw5/happy_holidays_watching_the_shrimpers_over_christmas__new_year_574527/index.shtmlAnd the tube strike:www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/17868.aspxSHRIMPERSDefender Bilel Mohsni came off before the end of Southend's excellent 2-0 win over Cheltenham a couple of weeks ago with an ankle problem, and though the injury will not require surgery, he could be out until the new year. Oh dear! However, the club will give him every chance to play and the Roots Hall faithful will be hoping to see the influential Frenchmen for such an important match. Loanee Peterborough midfielder Josh Simpson picked up a similar knock against the Robins, also being replaced, and he is a major doubt The player who really wants the game to be played is left-back Peter Gilbert, who will finally complete a three-match ban if it is, after being sent off against Stevenage way back on November 23rd.Midfielder Anthony Grant's back is still causing him pain but it would be a real blow if he doesn't start, we saw the difference he makes in the win at Whaddon Road.Back-up keeper Rhys Evans, defender Chris Barker and midfielder Ryan Hall should have recovered from a sickness bug that affected the Shrimpers squad during the week and all will be expected to be seen at the Hall.So it depends on a couple of late fitness tests to see what side Luggy will eventually put out.Let's hope Johnny plays and turns out a good performance, just to prove a few critics, including his boss, wrong. I'll keep Bilel and Anthony both in, and a quick prayer at midnight mass tonight, they are our best players, and one to keep the weather away as well, but the Frenchman is obviously struggling so Graham Coughlan to play if he is out.Starting with both Soares and Hall wide could leave us a touch short in midfield but it's worth a start at home, with son of Luggy dropping back, and our new found scoring sensation Jack Midson running around on his own.Unlucky for Barry Corr but a very decent guy to have come off the bench if it's goaless with thirty minutes left on the clock. This a Boxing Day six-pointer showdown; lose, and we'll back in the mess, the 2-0 win at Cheltenham a pre-snow memory, win, and we can really hope Luggy's lot have turned a corner and, yes, the play-offs could be whispered about without the need to check if you've had to much mulled wine. 2-0 Blues; mine's a large whisky!Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Barker, Mohsni, Herd, Soares, Grant, Easton, Hall, Sturrock, Midson.Subs: Evans, Coughlan, Prosser, Zaaboub, Crawford, Midson, Corr.COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!OPPOSITIONStimmo; not known to produce shy and retiring type sides A former Blue, we've already had a few battles with sides amanged by Bees boss Mark Stimpson, well, Gillingham actually. So let's see if he's calmed down a touch in his middle age.No away wins yet for Barnet, a problem Stimmo had at his former club where they had to wait a year for a positive result! On the injury front, striker Izale McLeod is fit after recovering from muscle stiffness, and will face the team that turned him down after a pre-season trail. (Though beware taking the piss, he scored a brace in the Bees last game, a 2-0 home over Accrington, report below.) Winger Glenn Poole (ankle) may start; but midfielder Mark Byrne, on loan from Notts Forest, (knee), defenders Daniel Leach, an aussie, so boo him, Darren Dennehy (both foot), and forward Danny Kelly (hamstring), will all be watching from the stands. They were known as 'The Hillmen' and played in New Barnet before moving to Queens Road in 1889.Initially, they played friendly games before becoming inaugural members of the North London League in 1892-93. They went on to success in the North Middlesex League Division II (1894-95 runners-up) and the Premier League (1896-97 champions.) Promoted to the London League Division II, Barnet became champions in 1897-98 and spent the following seasons in London League Division I before ceasing to exsist in the 1901-02 season. Two local clubs, Barnet Avenue FC (formed 1890) and Alston Works AFC (formed 1901) continued to attract support. Barnet Avenue renamed themselves Barnet FC in 1904 and as staunch believers in the amateur game they shunned the London Football Authority in favour of the Amateur Football Association.Alston Works AFC, later Barnet Alston FC, became champions of the London League in 1906/7. In 1907 they moved to the club's current ground at Underhill, Barnet Lane. Their first match was a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace FC on 14 September 1907. After merging with the Avenue team in 1912 they spearheaded the new Athenian League as Barnet and Alston FC. After the First World War in 1919 they became the third instance of Barnet FC. This team continues today.(For the full history of the club up to the present day, go here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnet_F.C.)
