The Day Football Died

28 November 2011 08:14
Yesterday came a shock to everyone involved in football to learn the tragic news that former Sheffield United, Newcastle United and Everton midfielder and Wales Manger Gary Speed had taken his own life.

Speed, 42 was found dead Sunday (27 November 2011) morning at his home in Chester and the news of his death came as a shock to everyone who knew him.

He signed for Sheffield United on 1st January 2008 by then manager Bryan Robson, making his debut in a 0-0 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and scored his first goal against Coventry City three months later.

On 25 November that year he played his final game for United following a back injury. He became coach at the Lane and in August 2010 came manager – succeeding Kevin Blackwell. However his managerial career at Bramall Lane only lasted until mid December when he was head hunted by Wales National Team.

He had been in charge of the Blades for 18 games (winning 6 and drawing 3) before taking the reigns at Wales.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.
