Tommy Smith is a young defender who progressed through the Ipswich Town Academy to sign a professional contract in August 2007. He made his senior debut against Preston on the opening day of the 2008-09 season, but then missed much of the remainder of the campaign through injury. Tommy was a regular member of the side early in the 2010-11 season, but had fewer opportunities after Paul Jewell took over as manager from Roy Keane and joined Colchester United on loan for the final weeks. Having represented England at U17 and U18 levels, Tommy switched his allegiance to New Zealand, the country where he lived between the ages of eight and 16, and played all three games for the All Whites at the 2010 World Cup.
