West Ham predicted lineup vs Lyon - Europa League

13 April 2022 14:30

West Ham stand on the edge of history as they prepare to face Lyon on Thursday with a place in the Europa League semi-finals at stake.

The Hammers secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg, despite having Aaron Cresswell sent off just before half-time. Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring before Lyon levelled things up through Tanguy Ndombele, who is on loan at his former club from Tottenham.

David Moyes has a few key players missing here, and has a few big selection calls to make.

Here is the starting XI he seems most likely to go with...

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Alphonse Areola (GK) - West Ham's European keeper has been solid this season. There is little to choose between him and Lukasz Fabianski.

Ben Johnson (RB) -
Ryan Fredericks and Vladimir Coufal will both be pushing for a start but Johnson should get the nod.

Craig Dawson (CB) -
Will need to be at his best here with usual partner Kurt Zouma absent through injury.

Issa Diop (CB) -
The natural replacement for Zouma. His performance will be watched closely.

Arthur Masuaku (LB) -
The aforementioned Cresswell is suspended, meaning West Ham will be without his incredible set-piece taking ability. Masuaku has been fine when called upon this season, though.

2. Midfielders

Declan Rice (CM) - West Ham's most important player. Has two goals in this competition this campaign.

Tomas Soucek (CM) -
Not been quite as influential this season as he has in the past, but he has played an unholy amount of football in recent years.

Pablo Fornals (AM) -
Gives the Hammers' much-needed composure and guile in the final third.

3. Forwards

Jarrod Bowen (RW) - Continues to astound with the consistency of his production. What a signing since 2020.

Michail Antonio (ST) -
His form is getting worrying, with his lengthy goal drought continuing at the weekend. However, there is no one to replace him.

Said Benrahma (LW) -
Benrahma is likely to fend off competition from several players to keep his place here.
