Tottenham Women Confirm Signing of Alex Morgan

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Orlando Pride and USWNT striker Alex Morgan for the 2020/21 season.

Morgan is one of the most recognisable names in the women's game, having risen to global stardom with the USWNT, winning two World Cups with her national side. She gave birth to her daughter Charlie in May, and she hasn't appeared for the Pride since the previous August.

Few could believe the news when it first broke over the weekend that Spurs, fighting to re-establish themselves in the top-flight after a consolidating 2019/20, were hoping to conclude a deal. It has rapidly grown into a realistic prospect, however, and the club confirmed the deal on Saturday.

She will wear the number 13 shirt she typically wears on the international stage, and comes as one of the most ambitious and exciting signings English women's football has seen.

Morgan has scored regularly for a number of clubs in the states, honing her reputation as one of the best goalscorers around. She spent time in Europe with Lyon in 2017, but this represents her first venture into English football.

On the international stage, she has scored 107 goals in 169 appearances, putting her fifth on the USWNT's all-time top scoring charts. Abby Wambach leads the way by some distance on 184.

She will be hoping to use her time in England to rebuild fitness after more than a year out of action, but at 31, she should still be at the peak of her powers once she gets up to speed.

In addition to her two World Cups, Morgan is a former Olympic gold medallist, while she also won Ligue 1 Feminine and the Champions League in her brief stint with Lyon. She could hardly be more decorated, and is a serious, serious coup for Spurs.
