Tottenham vs Manchester City: Picking a Combined XI Ahead of Premier League Clash

20 November 2020 22:15

Tottenham host Manchester City in a mouthwatering Premier League clash this weekend, as Jose Mourinho prepares to pit his wits against old adversary Pep Guardiola.

The pair's rivalry dates back to their days at Real Madrid and Barcelona, and although the temperature has been turned down on their once fractious relationship, both men will be keen to earn full bragging rights come full time.

Mourinho's Spurs have the chance to go top of the table with a win, while Guardiola's City are uncharacteristically at the bottom of the top ten - notching just 12 points from their opening seven games to trail Tottenham by five.

Both teams have injuries to contend with, but that hasn't stopped 90min from picking the best possible combined XI - injuries permitting - possible.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) - GK - The Tottenham skipper has been in fine form since his return from injury last season, and made some impressive saves to keep West Brom at bay in Spurs' previous outing.

Kyle Walker (Man City) - RB - Spurs have struggled to fill the void at right-back since Walker's departure for City in 2017. The Englishman's pace and clinical ability in the final third has made him one of the league's best full-backs.

Ruben Dias (Man City) - CB - Despite only joining in the summer, Dias has got off to an impressive start at City. The Portuguese centre-back, who was also a reported target for Mourinho, has formed a promising-looking partnership with Aymeric Laporte in recent fixtures.

Aymeric Laporte (Man City) - CB - Speak of the devil, the Frenchman was sidelined for half of last season and boy did City miss him. Laporte is undoubtedly City's best defender, and early signs of a partnership brewing with Dias have excited City fans.

Sergio Reguilon (Tottenham) - LB - Spurs' defence hasn't been pivotal to their success this season, but Reguilon has been a standout since his arrival. The left-back has been bombing up and down the flank at frightening pace, and has already developed a connection with Harry Kane.

2. Midfielders

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham) - CDM - The Danish midfielder was brought in from Southampton this summer to offer more solidity to Tottenham's midfield, and he's done that in abundance. Hojbjerg often ends games having made the most passes, and efficiently breaks up opposition play.

Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham) - CM - After remaining in north London after a challenging first season, Ndombele has looked a player reborn this time round. The defensive security of Hojbjerg has given the Frenchman the licence to break free and be creative, even if he just about manages to complete a full game...

Kevin De Bruyne (Man City) - CM - The Belgian wizard will be fresh in the minds of England fans after completing some dazzling passes against the Three Lions last week. De Bruyne has already registered three league assists in just six games this season.

3. Forwards

Raheem Sterling (Man City) - RW - After withdrawing from the England squad due to injury, it looks like Sterling will be available for the trip to Spurs. The winger has five goals and four assists in all competitions this season, and his availability would be a big boost for City heading into this game.

Harry Kane (Tottenham) - ST - The Englishman was just behind Son in the voting for the Premier League's Player of the Month award, and comes into the game in incredible club form. Kane didn't bag a goal in any of England's three recent games which is unusual by his standards, but that only proves he's human after all, right?

Son Heung-min (Tottenham) - LW -
Spurs' South Korean mega star sits joint-top of the Golden Boot race with eight goals, and has taken his incredible partnership with Kane to new heights this season. Will fancy his chances against City, having netted in the sides' previous two encounters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
