The Liverpool XI That Should Start Against Burnley

Liverpool eased fears of a serious post-title hangover with back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Brighton over the past week.

Sean Dyche's stout Burnley unit are next on the agenda for Jurgen Klopp's champions as they go about setting the tone for next season with a strong string of results to round off an unforgettable campaign.

Klopp's team selection had previously been pretty predictable before the three-month hiatus but with games coming thick and fast following the resumption last month, things have got a little more unforeseeable.

Here's what the German boss could go with for Burnley's visit on Saturday afternoon.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Liverpool's superb centre-back partnership

Alisson (GK) - The Brazilian's started every Premier League game he's been available for this season and there's no reason as to why that won't continue on Saturday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) - Neco Williams endured a mixed 45-minute cameo at left-back last time out against Brighton and although the talented 19-year-old is certainly capable of granting Alexander-Arnold a bit of respite at right-back, the Premier League's second-highest assist-maker is in line for another start against Dyche's plucky Clarets.

Joe Gomez (CB) - Gomez certainly hasn't been at his best as of late, with errors starting to creep into his game a little more frequently, but there's no doubting his talent and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him line-up Virgil van Dijk for the remainder of the campaign - especially with Joel Matip out of action.

Virgil van Dijk (CB) - It's borderline arrogance what this man is doing at the heart of the Liverpool defence at the moment. The game's simply too easy for him. No one in the Liverpool squad has racked up more minutes than van Dijk (3060) this term and there's just no way he doesn't start this one.

Andy Robertson (LB) - A brief hiatus for the Scotsman as he should re-enter the fold on Saturday. Robertson looked more like the energetic full-back that's so key to this Liverpool side in the second period on Wednesday night after enduring an evening to forget at the Etihad.

2. Midfielders

Naby Keita has impressed for the Reds since the restart

Fabinho (DM) - Questions regarding Jordan Henderson's fitness mean the Brazilian's a sure bet to start at the base of midfield on Saturday. After an indifferent spell following his return from injury at the start of the year, Fabinho's looked much more like himself since the Premier League's resumption - starring in Liverpool's imperious 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace two weeks ago.

James Milner (CM) - Chances have come few and far between for Milner this season, but his ninth Premier League start of the campaign could come at Anfield on Saturday. The 34-year-old's the best option to fill Henderson's void with his leadership and workhorse nature which would allow him to cover the surges of Alexander-Arnold at ease.

Naby Keita (CM) - It's been a frustrating time for Keita since his 2018 switch from RB Leipzig but in unprecedented circumstances, we're starting to see the very best of the Guinea international. The dynamic midfielder was a shining light in the recent dire Merseyside derby and picked up two assists in his last two outings - with his work out of possession coming to the fore against Brighton last time out. Expect Klopp to try and maintain Keita's momentum by gifting him rare back-to-back starts.

3. Forwards

Liverpool's majestic front three are set to team-up once more against Burnley

Sadio Mane (LW) - Klopp opted for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left flank last time out, with Mane earning 30 minutes as a second-half substitute. However, the Senegalese star is a sure bet to return to the German boss' XI with Saturday's visitors poised to make life tough for the Reds' superb front line.

Roberto Firmino (CF) - I mean, the game is at Anfield so you can already rule out the Brazilian finding the back of the net in this one. Nevertheless, the importance of Klopp's fulcrum to the German's system just can't be understated and his ability to unbalance a defensive line with astute movement will be key to unlocking a rigid Burnley side.

Mohamed Salah (RW) - With Jamie Vardy in his sights amid the race for the Golden Boot, you can bet your mortgage that the Egyptian's begging Klopp for persistent starts to round off the campaign. Salah's scored three times since the restart, including a brace against the Seagulls last time out, and it's hard to envisage Klopp dropping his little dancer to the bench for this one.
