Spurs enter talks with Southampton for Jannik Vestergaard

Tottenham have held initial talks over a potential deal to sign Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, with centre-back a priority position for the club in the transfer market.

Toby Alderweireld is said to be considering a summer exit, while the squad lost vast experience when Jan Vertonghen left a year ago. Only the developing Joe Rodon has been signed since, while Spurs have also now sold Juan Foyth as well.

90min understands that Spurs want to sign at least one new centre-back this summer, but ideally two, and it was revealed that new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has asked the club hierarchy to explore a potential deal to reunite him with Wolves captain Conor Coady.

Spurs are also interested in Joachim Andersen, who spent last season on loan at Fulham and impressed despite the Cottagers’ relegation, Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu as club officials develop a number of leads to whittle down later.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton’s Vestergaard is the latest centre-back option that Spurs have entered talks for. The towering 28-year-old has been playing in the Premier League since 2018, was an automatic starter when fit last season and has impressed for Denmark at Euro 2020.

Formerly of Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach, Vestergaard was brought on as a substitute during Denmark’s harrowing opening game against Finland but has started every game since after coach Kasper Hjulmand opted to switch to a back three.

He will now face England in the semi-finals this week, as will Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Denmark aiming to go all the way 29 years after they shocked Europe at the 1992 tournament.

Vestergaard has just entered the final year of his Southampton contract, which could serve to limit his valuation amid the danger of the Saints losing him for nothing in 2022.
