Rangers keen to bring Billy Gilmour back to Ibrox on loan

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is keen to bring Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour back to the club on loan next season.

The 20-year-old, who swapped Rangers for Chelsea in 2017, is expected to leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis this summer, and his dazzling display in Scotland's goalless draw with England has earned him a long list of suitors.

Reports in England have suggested that Norwich City are at the front of a queue which also includes Leeds United and Wolves, but the Daily Record claim that Gerrard has made a late push to try and lure Gilmour back to Scotland.

It is thought that Chelsea would prefer to send Gilmour to another Premier League side, but Rangers hope that they will be able to make a more convincing argument with the promise of Champions League football - assuming they make it through the qualifiers.

However, with the Champions League qualification rounds not set to finish until late August, Rangers may face an uphill battle to convince both Chelsea and Gilmour to wait.

Interestingly, there are also suggestions that Gilmour may not actually be heading for a loan move. It is thought that the Scot's future may be directly linked to that of Mateo Kovacic, who has been linked with his own move away from Stamford Bridge.

Kovacic was touted as a potential sweetener in the bid for Inter right-back Achraf Hakimi, but with Paris Saint-Germain set to win the race for the Moroccan's signature, Kovacic's future appears to be up in the air.

To see Kovacic leave Chelsea would be a surprise, but Thomas Tuchel does have a ready-made replacement in Gilmour - so the chance to cash in on the Croatian may end up being too good to turn down.

If Kovacic remains at Chelsea, expect to see Gilmour head out on loan for some regular football; potentially at Rangers if Gerrard and the club's hierarchy get their way.
