Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has apologised to supporters after they travelled to the Amex Stadium to watch their side get thumped 4-0 by Brighton.

United needed a victory to keep their top-four hopes alive but put on one of the most disappointing showings in recent memory as goals from Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard secured an easy win for the Seagulls.

After the game, Rangnick did not shy away from voicing his frustration.

"It was a terrible performance," he said. "From the first until the last minute, it was not enough. We can only apologise for this performance and a humiliating defeat."

Rangnick went on to insist that his players did their best to follow his game plan but United were simply not able to stop Brighton from running riot.

"We were never in a position where we could stop them playing through our lines," he explained. "We told the players to be as compact as they could but we couldn't stop it.

"I don't think they ignored the gameplan but we weren't able to stop them. We gave them too much space and if you do that against a technically good team like Brighton, you will get punished."
