Manchester City star Phil Foden is close to putting pen to paper on a bumper new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

As 90min revealed in August, tying up Foden's long-term future has been one of City's top priorities for a while now, with those in charge at the club keen to hand him the reward he deserves for blossoming into one of the Premier League's top talents.

He still has three years remaining on his current deal, but Foden remains on the comparatively small wage he agreed back in December 2018, before he was even a first-team regular under Pep Guardiola.

Clearly, a lot has changed since then and Foden is a key player for both club and country, andThe Athletic state that City are close to finalising the terms of a sizeable reward for the 21-year-old.

A deal has not yet been finalised, but both parties have made it clear that they are keen to do business and there are not believed to be any major obstacles in the way of completion.

Having flirted with the first team for years, Foden made his long-awaited breakthrough towards the end of the 2019/20 season, shining after the lockdown and earning himself a permanent spot in the squad as a result.

He made 50 appearances in all competitions last year, racking up 16 goals and ten assists for good measure, and Foden has started to impress again this season after missing the opening few weeks with a foot injury.

Foden put in a man-of-the-match performance in City's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, in which he scored his side's first goal, and then stole the show for England against Andorra with a dazzling performance from deep.

City recognise that Foden's stock is still rising and have wasted little time in working on a new contract. They are keen to ensure the youngster remains happy and it appears as though they are close to striking a deal.
