Former Millwall defender Christian Mbulu has passed away at the age of 23.

Mbulu was most recently playing with League Two side Morecambe, who he'd joined from Crewe Alexandra during the January transfer window.

Mbulu's former club Motherwell have now confirmed the defender has sadly passed away on Tuesday, aged 23.

"We are shocked to hear of the news of Christian’s death,” Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon said. "He was such a friendly, pleasant young man who we loved having around Fir Park.

“Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope their privacy is respected by everyone as they try to come to terms with their loss."

Mbulu joined Motherwell during the 2018/19 season, where he made six first-team appearances for the club and even picked up an assist during a 2-1 win over St. Johnstone.

He also appeared for Motherwell's reserve side in the Challenge Cup.

Before moving to Scotland, Mbulu came through at Brentwood Town where he was spotted by Millwall. The Championship club signed the defender on a three-year deal, during which he also spent time on loan with Braintree Town.

Mbulu was never able to make an appearance at Millwall, but he was included in their matchday squad 10 times throughout his career in London.

Stoke City striker Lee Gregory, who was Mbulu's teammate during his time at Millwall, paid his respects to the 23-year-old on social media and tributes have continued to pour in from his former colleagues, as well as fans.
