Manchester United have apparently held talks with Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen as the club considers making a £42m bid in the January transfer window.

The Denmark international will be free to leave north London on a free transfer at the end of the season once his contract with the club runs out, but Manchester United want to sign Eriksen in a cut-price deal at the start of next year.

Spanish outlet El Desmarque (via The Mirror) claims that United held talks with Eriksen last month as they weigh up potential recruits for January, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side believed to have set £42m aside for the Dane's signature.

Eriksen hasn't been at his best this season as he appears to bounce back for a summer that was filled with links to Real Madrid, and it's unknown if the 27-year-old would even be open to a move to Old Trafford at this stage.

If Manchester United are serious about thier interest then a deal will need to be wrapped up before the new year, as part of the Bosman ruling allows clubs from abroad to talk to Eriksen without Tottenham's permission from January 1.

Eriksen is one of three Tottenham stars who will leave the club on a free transfer next summer, as Manchester United's long-term target Toby Alderweireld, as well as his centre-back partner Jan Vertonghen, are also in the last few months of their contracts.

The Denmark international has already spent six years in the Premier League following a £13m move from Ajax, where he's gone on to make 291 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions.

He's been directly involved in 155 goals during that time too, although Eriksen has only picked up one goal and one assist so far in the 2019/20 season.
