Leicester City women will celebrate their Women’s Championship title and promotion to the Women’s Super League by playing a first ever game at the King Power Stadium on 2 May.
The Foxes mathematically sealed their top flight promotion with a 2-0 win over London City Lionesses in early April and then played away against Lewes in their last outing. But the upcoming game against Charlton has been moved from the team’s usual home pitch to the King Power.
It is the last game of the 2020/21 season and afterwards the Leicester players will also be presented with the Women’s Championship trophy.
It will be a day of celebration and a promotion party at the King Power, marking Leicester’s rapid rise up the women’s football pyramid. The only downside is that fans are still not permitted to attend as it comes before the next stage of lockdown easing that comes into effect on 17 May.
The game will be available to watch for free online, either on LCFC TV via the club’s official website, or through the FA Player. Kick-off is at 2pm (BST) on Sunday 2 May.
Having been a third tier club as recently as 2018 and after back-to-back mid-table finishes in the Women’s Championship in 2018/19 and 2019/20, Leicester turned professional last summer when the team was officially taken over by the King Power parent company.
Significant investment in the playing squad followed, with numerous players with top flight experience brought on board in 2020 alone, adding to the existing young talent.
The likes of Remi Allen, Sophie Howard, Esmee de Graaf and Kirstie Levell all played in the WSL prior to joining Leicester. Meanwhile, defender Ashleigh Plumptre made the Foxes her first club after returning home from a spell playing college soccer in the United States, and teenage forwards Paige Bailey-Gayle and Lachante Paul were both developed in the youth ranks at Arsenal.
