Leeds One Point Away From Promotion to Premier League After 1-0 Barnsley Win

Leeds are just one point away from promotion to the Premier League following their 1-0 victory against Barnsley on Thursday.

Brentford's victory over Preston on Wednesday meant the Whites couldn't secure their spot in next season's top flight with a triumph over the Tykes, but Michael Sollbauer's own goal means it is now a matter of when not if they will be promoted.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were outshot by 12 to seven but the win means they are now five points clear of West Brom at the top of the Championship and six ahead of Brentford with two games left to play.

They could be promoted as soon as Friday if West Brom fail to beat Huddersfield, with the same scenario applying to Brentford's trip to Stoke.

The Yorkshire derby itself was a tense affair, with Mads Andersen missing a great opening seconds before Sollbauer put the ball into his own net from Patrick Bamford's cross.

Barnsley pressed late on, with Championship survival still on their minds, but some wasteful finishing means their fate is no longer in their hands.

Leeds' recent history in the Championship has been filled with near misses. They looked odds-on to secure automatic promotion during the 2018/19 season, but a late collapse saw them drop into the play-off places. They were then beaten over two legs by Frank Lampard's Derby.

As and when the Yorkshire side do secure promotion, it will be the first time they have played in England's top flight since 2004. That 2003/04 season saw them drop into the Championship during the midst of the club's financial crisis, and they later spent three terms in League One.

Bielsa was appointed as Leeds' manager in 2018

Managers like Uwe Rosler, Garry Monk and Paul Heckingbottom have come and gone in recent years, but Bielsa's appointment has coincided with an upturn in results, with both the club and manager close to ridding their 'nearly men' statuses.
