How can West Ham can qualify for the Champions League?

09 April 2022 01:30

West Ham are absolutely flying under David Moyes, and they're desperate to take that next step and qualify for the Champions League.

The Hammers are right in the fight for the top four, but they'll need a little bit of good fortune if they are to make it there through the Premier League. However, they remain in control of their own destiny through the Europa League.

Here's how West Ham can make it to Europe's top competition.

Premier League

Just finish in the top four. Easy.

Unfortunately for West Ham, things aren't so simple. They're playing catch-up to Tottenham and Arsenal, both of whom have more points from fewer games. The Hammers could also be overtaken by Man Utd, who are level on points with one game in hand.

If an English side wins the Champions League this year, their qualification spot does not move down to the next highest finisher in the league, so West Ham will need other teams to help them out if they are to get to the top four.

Europa League

With a top-four finish looking unlikely at this point, West Ham could put all their eggs in the Europa League basket. Whoever wins that competition gets a spot in the Champions League as a reward.

Moyes' men are in the quarter-final of the Europa League right now and hold a 1-1 aggregate score against French side Lyon, and they'll feel hard-done by as they had to play most of that game with ten men following a controversial red card for Aaron Cresswell.

The Hammers now have to go to Lyon to battle it out for a spot in the semi-final, where they'll face either Frankfurt or Barcelona, who are also tied at 1-1 after their first leg.

Should they get through that tie as well, all that will stand between West Ham and a spot in Europe's top competition is one of: RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Braga or Rangers.

The semi-finals will be played on April 28 and May. 5 The final will be played on May 18.
