Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford this coming season, despite being linked with a transfer away.
A nominee for the 2019 Ballon d’Or, Van de Beek struggled to live up to expectations last season following a £40m transfer from Ajax. He started only four Premier League games and looked increasingly devoid of confidence with each passing week.
Van de Beek was ruled out of Euro 2020 with Netherlands earlier this summer as a result of injury and has now returned to training for United ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
90min revealed back in March that United were open to the idea of including Van de Beek in their offer to Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho. That deal was eventually agreed for straight cash, but the 24-year-old has also been linked with other clubs across Europe.
The Manchester Evening News writes that there have been ‘tentative enquiries’ about Van de Beek from unnamed clubs in La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga, but the player himself sees his future at Old Trafford and wants to fight for his place.
A restful summer is said to have left him feeling ‘fit, fresh and ready’, with the groin injury that ended his Euro 2020 hopes believed to have been affecting in the latter stages of the club season.Van de Beek is currently working with United’s medical and fitness staff following his return to training this week and will start participating in full sessions with the rest of the squad from Monday.
He is therefore unlikely to be involved when United play QPR in a pre-season game on Saturday but will be part of the squad for further games against Brentford (28 July) and Preston (31 July). The squad then have a final summer friendly against Everton on 7 August, a week before Leeds visit Old Trafford in a highly anticipated Premier League opener.
