Chris Wilder will leave his role as Sheffield United manager, with his future at Bramall Lane becoming untenable even if the Blades were to stave off relegation.
Sheffield United have had a difficult second season in the top flight after spending most of 2019/20 in the top half and occasionally as high as fifth. But the club is 12 points adrift of safety and on course to record one of the lowest points totals in Premier League history.
Wilder, who was appointed in 2016 when Sheffield United were in League One, will no longer be in charge regardless and sources have confirmed to 90min that he has not been happy for a while.
The 53-year-old does not believe his ambitions are in line with the club ownership and the hierarchy was not backing him as would have been expected given his achievements.
Sheffield United had spent five seasons in League One prior to Wilder taking over - their longest spell outside the top two divisions of English football since the 1980s. But he ensured it would be no more than six years by achieving promotion in his first season in the job.
The Blades then consolidated for a year in the Championship, enjoying a top half finish, before finishing second in the second season and gaining automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Even before he was set to leave, Wilder was being linked with potential summer vacancies at both Crystal Palace and Newcastle.
