Aston Villa Manager Dean Smith Signs New Four-Year Deal

Aston Villa have announced that manager Dean Smith has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him tied to the club until 2023.

Smith joined Villa from Brentford last season following the sacking of Steve Bruce and quickly turned their fortunes around, guiding them to a playoff spot and ultimately promotion back to the Premier League.

Back in the top-flight, they have had a steady if somewhat inconsistent start to the season and sit in 15th place following a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday.

And they are clearly happy with Smith's stewardship, announcing the signing of a new long-term deal on Friday.

"Aston Villa is pleased to announce Dean Smith has signed a new four-year contract," a club statement says

"Dean, who joined as head coach in October 2018, successfully led the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking thanks to a 2-1 victory over Derby County in the Play-Off Final at Wembley in May.

"The new deal, which runs until 2023, will see Dean continue an association with Aston Villa that stretches back to his childhood as a supporter on the Holte End."

Speaking on the deal, Smith said: “I’m really happy to have committed my long term future to the Club. I’m looking forward to all the challenges that come with re-establishing Aston Villa as a top Premier League club.”

Club CEO Christian Purslow added: “The Board is delighted that Dean has signed a new four-year contract which puts him at the heart of the Club’s long term rebuilding plans.”

VIlla face the daunting prospect of a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday, following that up with a visit to Chelsea as they look to extend the four-point gap between themselves and the relegation places.
