Live Text Commentary
Full time

FT:Wigan 1-0 Newcastle: Ryan Taylor's second senior goal secured all three points for Wigan as they emerged victorious from what was actually a very poor game.

90

Newcastle have three minutes of added time to save themselves.

89

Aghahowa with a neat trick to get past Enrique and he finds Bent who fires a fraction wide.

88
Yellow Card

Steven Taylor picks up a late yellow for a foul born out of frustration on Marcus Bent.

86

Newcastle look very short of imagination and ideas and they are still not seeing enough of the ball.

83

Steven Taylor gives Given some problems and he goalkeeper makes things worse by trying to round Aghahowa and almost ends up dribbling into his own net.

82

Obafemi Martins has the chance to run at the Wigan defence but he fails to complete a simple 10 yards pass to Viduka and that sums up Newcastle today.

80
Yellow Card

Alan Smith has picked up a yellow card here for a poor tackle on Kevin Kilbane.

79
Substitution

Damien Duff is off now with Jose Sanchez Enrique on in his place which will push N'Zogbia onto the left wing now.

78

Newcastle have still only got that Viduka lob to show for their efforts and they really are struggling to create anything meaningful.

75
Substitution

Salomon Olembe is on in place of the goalscorer Ryan Taylor who has looked a littel uncomfortable at left back today.

71

Taylor fancies a second goal and he has just unleashed another rocket that Given tips over.

69
Substitution

Julius Aghahowa is on for Wigan in place of Antoine Sibierski to give the same qualities to the Wigan attack.

66
Substitution

Geremi is off to be replaced by Obafemi Martins to add some pace to the attacking line.

64
Goal

GOAL:Wigan 1-0 Newcastle: (64mins) What a stunning free kick from Ryan Taylor. He gives Wigan a deserved lead with a wonder strike.

60

The football has again drifted out of this game with the tackles now starting to fly in again and the ball is looking like a hot potato.

58

Paul Scharner drives in a long range effort that stings the palms of Given but the Irishman didn't look overly troubled by it.

56
Yellow Card

And Emre has talked his way into the book as well.

56
Yellow Card

James Milner picks up a booking for a tackle from behind just outside his own area.

52

Comical defending from Wigan as Melchiot and Kirkland confuse each other, the ball then loops into the air and Viduka tries to over head kick it over Kirkland only for Bramble appear and clear from underneath his own crossbar.

50

Emre whips in a free kick that is easily cleared. That was a very poor delivery from the former Inter Milan midfield man.

47

Ryan Taylor is a set-piece specialist and he whips in a good one here that Faye almost slices wildly into his own net.

Second half

The second half is underway and hopefully - for all concerned - this will be an improvement on that dire first period.

Half time

HT:Wigan 0-0 Newcastle: There is the half time whistle and that 45 minutes of pain are over. Surely it can only get better after the break.

45

Two minutes have been added.

44

Both managers have a lot of work to do at the break because this has been terrible so far.

41

This has been a really poor game with so little football being played that there is nothing to comment on really.

38

Finally Newcastle get their foot on the ball with Emre enjoying a few neat touches but Duff then miscontrols a simple ball and Wigan have a throw.

35

Steve Bruce will be delighted with his side's effort so far however he will be slightly disappointed that they have not punished Newcastle as yet and that may cost them if Newcastle find their stride.

34
Yellow Card

Michael Brown picks up the opening yellow card with a typically robust challenge on N'Zogbia.

31

Newcastle really need to start getting the ball down and playing because Wigan are dominating the possession and there is only one side that looks like scoring, even if they haven't troubled Given so far.

28

Michael Brown with a superb driving run for Wigan from inside his own half and Newcastle are all over the place at the moment.

25

Marcus Bent is a man in form and you can see the confidence he has at the moment because the ball is sticking to him when Wigan feed it forward and he is giving them a platform from which to build attacks.

22

Steve Bruce has got this Wigan team working for each other and they are hounding the ball down and Newcastle just seem totally incapable of passing the ball to one another while Wigan look calm and composed in possession.

20

Wigan are definitely the most threatening so far and Newcastle are having real problems dealing with the lively Valencia on the right hand side.

16

Newcastle haven't really managed to get their attacking players in the game so far and as such they have been unable to silence a vibrant home crowd.

13

Wigan are enjoying the better of it at the moment with Valencia in particular seeing a lot of the ball and he now pulls it back from the byline for Bent who volleys brilliantly and its literally just over.

9

Still neither side has really got the ball down to plot a way through with both sides so far preferring to take the aerial route.

6

It is a really high tempo beginning here with both sides flinging themselves into the challenges although the quality of passing is not the best.

4

We have had a very early disruption with Antoine Sibierski staying down for all of two minutes with what appeared to be nothing more than a bump on his side after an aerial challenge with Faye.
