Mascherano promises Liverpool backlash

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is predicting a backlash from the wounded Reds starting with Sunday's Merseyside derby against Everton.

The Anfield club have crashed out of the Champions League and currently sit down in seventh place in the Premier League table following a heavily-criticised start to the season.

But despite the doom and gloom currently surrounding Anfield, an upbeat Mascherano has set his sights on a morale-boosting derby victory over the similarly out-of-form Toffees when the sides meet at Goodison Park.

"We know that in the league we have got to start winning - and winning soon - as we are not in the top four," he told the club's official website.

"This is strange for the club and the supporters because in the last four years we have always been in there, fighting for the title or to get into the Champions League and we need to start winning games, so that we can do that again.

"We know it is going to be very difficult on Sunday but this is a really important game for us and for our supporters and we have got to start winning in the league again by beating Everton."
