Gillingham 3-1 Accrington Stanley: Match Report

12 March 2011 17:19
Barcham buoys Gills Andy Barcham scored twice as Gillingham gave their League Two play-off hopes a timely boost with a 3-1 win at home to Accrington. The game began in explosive style with the Accrington defence misjudging Kevin Maher's third-minute through-ball allowing Barcham to coast in, round goalkeeper Alex Cisak and tap the ball in to the empty net. The visitors should have been level in the 10th minute but after Gills defender Matt Lawrence fouled Andrew Procter in the box, Terry Gornell fired his penalty against the post. However, they didn't have long to wait and levelled in the 14th minute as John Nutter failed to control Ian Craney's harmless long ball allowing Sean McConville to stroll in unmarked and beat Gills goalkeeper Alan Julian. Gillingham edged ahead in first-half stoppage time. Garry Richards' long ball was flicked on by Adebayo Akinfenwa and the impressive Barcham latched on to the loose ball before cleverly dinking the ball over the onrushing Cisak. The hosts controlled proceedings after the break and after Cody McDonald had somehow missed an open goal the striker sealed the win as he headed home from close range in the 55th minute after good work from Barcham and Nutter on the left.
