Football in Accrington is firmly linked with English football history. Accrington F.C was a founder member of the football league back in 1888. Accrington Stanley (who took over following the resigning of Accrington FC) played in the English football league until they were forced to resign in March 1962 because of financial difficulties.

The current Accrington Stanley was formed in 1968. The 1970’s and 1980’s were spent in the lower divisions of non-league football, however the 1990’s saw Accrington Stanley have two good FA Cup runs and current manager John Coleman who was appointed in 1999 managed to get Accrinton Stanley promoted back to the conference, scoring over a 100 goals and losing only three times.

Last year Stanley finished mid table in the conference and are now pushing for promotion back to the football league. Accrington an historical football town has had over 40 years without a league side but on the present rate of progression that might be about to change.
