The Chelsea Lineup That Should Start Against Sevilla

20 October 2020 12:08

Chelsea will get their Champions League campaign underway on Tuesday when they welcome Sevilla to Stamford Bridge.

On paper, the Spanish side look to be Chelsea's toughest test in a group which also features Rennes and Krasnodar, so Frank Lampard will be eyeing a statement victory to prove that his Blues are not to be taken lightly.

He'll want a response from Saturday's 3-3 draw with Southampton, and so let's take a look at the lineup he should go with.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Édouard Mendy (GK) - The Senegal international has returned to training earlier than expected and should be brought back ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was again in the headlines for the wrong reasons against Southampton.

Reece James (RB) - James sat out the majority of the last game, meaning he'll be fresh and raring to go against Sevilla.

Thiago Silva (CB) - International duty kept Silva out against Southampton, but after the Blues' defensive capitulation, Lampard will be keen to call on his experience once more.

Kurt Zouma (CB) - Bringing the athleticism alongside Silva should be Zouma, who will be eager to atone for his error at the weekend.

Ben Chilwell (LB) - Chilwell already looks comfortable in Chelsea blue and was one of the side's top performers last time out.

2. Midfielders

N'Golo Kanté (DM) - Lampard will be desperate for Kanté to get back to his dominant best and help Chelsea look confident at the back for once.

Jorginho (DM) - It's a straight shoot-out with Mateo Kovačić for this one, but expect Jorginho to retain his place after his impressive assist against Southampton.

Mason Mount (RM) - Mount's energy and pressing are crucial to Lampard's way of playing football, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him deployed in a deeper role in an attempt to give Chelsea some extra support.

Kai Havertz (AM) - One of the first names on the team sheet these days, Havertz is looking happy and healthy, and most importantly, he's scoring goals.

Christian Pulisic (LM) - Pulisic is back to full fitness, so it's just a case of giving him the chance to get back up to speed with games.

3. Forward

Timo Werner (ST) - A no-brainer after his showing against Southampton. Werner was outstanding back in a central role and is fully deserving of another shot in the team.
