Spurs Shocked as Eric Dier Demands New £120k-a-Week Contract

Spurs have been taken aback by Eric Dier's request to have his wages doubled if he's to sign a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Dier, who has made 239 appearances for the north London club since signing in 2014, has one year remaining on his current contract, with reports that Spurs are willing to sell the 26-year old if he does not pen a new deal this summer.

Dier has been playing in his preferred centre-back position under Jose Mourinho

The England international was unwilling to sign a new contract earlier in the season due to a lack of playing time – but his increased role since football's restart, starting all of his side's games at centre-back before being handed his current ban has convinced him of his future.

Another stumbling block may have appeared though, with the Daily Mail reporting that Eric Dier has asked for his wages to be doubled to £120k a week.

It is believed that Dier has made these demands to bring him level with others in the Spurs squad, but the Lilywhites believe this may be unreasonable due to the unpredictable financial consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mourinho is keen for Dier to stay

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has previously expressed his desire for Dier to stay at Tottenham, and claimed that the player himself 'wants to stay very much'.

The former Sporting man was often used as a defensive midfielder by former manager Mauricio Pochettino, but both Mourinho and Dier have spoken of the England international's wish to play at centre-back – a wish which has been granted after working hard at the position since Mourinho's arrival.

The Portuguese manager said of Dier's performances this week: "I think he's doing very very well, we look forward to next season where he's there as a centre-back to be an important player for us."
