Manchester United's goalkeeper situation heading into the coming season is no closer to being resolved, as Sheffield United push for another season-long loan deal for Dean Henderson.
An area of usual solidity has shown cracks in the past two years, with Red Devils stalwart David de Gea guilty of a series of errors that have prompted a rethink of the position heading into the summer window.
Henderson has enjoyed two fruitful loan spells at Bramall Lane in the past two seasons, sparking speculation that he could usurp the long-serving Spaniard in between the sticks at Old Trafford. However, the Daily Mail have revealed that the situation is no closer to being resolved, with the Englishman's future 'in limbo'.
At first glance it seemed like being a fairly smooth transition. Sergio Romero appeared set to be moved on having grown discomforted by a lack of playing time, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stating previously he doesn't have room for three top goalkeepers.
Yet the murmurings coming out of the north west suggest that this won't be the case, and that another loan move for Henderson is on the cards with United to stay put with the two main stoppers they have.
The Blades would like to take the 23-year-old on for another season, but United are more keen on sending him out on loan abroad, as opposed to the Premier League, to further his education. Chris Wilder's men have already failed with a £15m bid for Aaron Ramsdale this window.
Just 12 months ago, prior to his second Sheffield United stint, Henderson penned fresh £35k-per-week terms at United, and talk is that they could hand him a new deal this summer ahead of another loan move. The reason for that is that if they send him out for another year, he would return to Old Trafford with just one year left on his current deal.
Henderson is adamant on being number one wherever he goes, as the likelihood is that a United stay would mean he plays second fiddle to De Gea - who Solskjaer still sees as his first-choice stopper.
Chelsea have been credited with an interest in Henderson, while the Mail also bizarrely throw Arsenal's hat into the ring as a side on the lookout for a new keeper. Best ignore that last line.
