Jurgen Klopp has said his Liverpool players have written their own chapter in the club's fabled history by beating Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford, but he is sympathetic towards opposite number Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after such a humiliating result.
A hat trick from Mohamed Salah plus strikes from Diogo Jota and Naby Keita ensured the Reds romped to a memorable win on Sunday.
Liverpool stopped applying pressure on United with the score at 5-0 early in the second half, though Klopp insisted he and his players have respect for their rivals.
"An insane result. It is special but we don't celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents," Klopp told a post-match press conference.
"This group always wanted to write their own chapters in the history book of this club and today that's a chapter."
When Klopp was asked whether he had sympathy for Solskjaer after such an embarrassing defeat, he replied: "Of course. The last thing I'd want to be is in his shoes in this moment."
The Liverpool boss also gave a quick update on Naby Keita, who had to be substituted following Paul Pogba's red-card challenge on him.
"We have to see how serious it is. Very painful. We will know more tomorrow or the day after," Klopp added.
"Naby is in a great moment. He's an outstanding player. He played outstandingly well vs Atletico until he made the mistake for the first goal."
The result sees Liverpool climb back above Manchester City into second place in the Premier League table, and move to within a point of leaders Chelsea. Klopp's men now also have the best goal difference in the league (+21) and have scored the most goals (27).
United, meanwhile, have dropped to seventh place and have now conceded as many goals as 18th-placed Burnley (15).
