Jose Mourinho's Record Against His Former Clubs - Ranked

28 November 2020 21:00

Chelsea play Tottenham on Sunday as Jose Mourinho returns to the club where he lifted three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and three League Cups.

Mourinho has managed a selection of top sides across Europe, and has subsequently returned to six out of seven of his former employers with varying degrees of success.

The Tottenham manager is yet to face Inter in the opposition dugout - despite leaving the San Siro over a decade ago. Let's take a look at how he's fared against the teams he has returned to.

6. Real Madrid

Win rate: 0%

Mourinho has never beaten Real Madrid - neither before his three-year stint at the Bernabeu or after.

The 57-year-old has only faced his former side once since departing the Spanish capital; the 2017 UEFA Super Cup final when Mourinho was in charge at Manchester United.

The Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat, Casemiro and Isco on the scoresheet for Real before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for United.

5. Manchester United

Win rate: 33%

Mourinho has a half decent win rate over the Red Devils across his career, winning 43% of his encounters with United.

Since exiting Old Trafford in 2018 Mourinho has come up against his former side on three occasions with Tottenham, losing the first, drawing the second and winning the third.

The one victory over United was one to savour too: a crushing 6-1 win at Old Trafford in October 2020.

4. Chelsea

Win rate: 42%

Mourinho has faced Chelsea as Inter, United and Spurs manager, winning five of his 12 meetings with his former side.

Inter beat the Blues home and away in the last 16 of the Champions League en route to winning the competition in 2010, and their second leg victory at Stamford Bridge remains the last time Mourinho has won at Chelsea as a visiting manager.

United got the better of Chelsea twice during Mourinho's tenure, while Spurs knocked the Blues out of this season's Carabao Cup - although on penalties, admittedly.

3. Porto

Win rate: 50%

Mourinho has faced Porto on six occasions since departing the club in 2004, winning three, losing two and drawing once.

All of these meetings have been with the Portuguese manager in the Chelsea dugout in the Champions League.

The Blues won at Stamford Bridge but lost at the Estadio do Dragao in the group stages of both the 2004/05 and 2015/16 competition, and knocked Porto out in the last 16 in 2006/07. Mourinho has never won at the Estadio do Dragao as a visiting manager.

2. Benfica

Win rate: 75%

Mourinho has played nearly as many games against Benfica as he spent in charge of the Portuguese side.

He managed a full 11 games for Benfica in 2000, before departing after being refused a contract extension.

Mourinho has since returned to Benfica on four occasions and is yet to lose to his former side, beating them twice with Manchester United and winning one and drawing one with Porto.

1. Uniao de Leiria

Win rate: 100%

Mourinho spent six months at Portuguese outfit Uniao de Leiria before moving to Porto in January 2001.

He has since faced them on three occasions with Porto, emerging victorious each time.

Porto beat Uniao de Leiria in the Taca de Portugal in August 2003, before recording home and away wins in the 2003/04 Primeira Liga.
