Jamaal Lascelles Admits Anger in Newcastle Dressing Room After Man Utd Defeat

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has revealed there was frustration in the dressing room following the side's 4-1 defeat at home to Manchester United last weekend.

The Magpies were ahead after two minutes and had held the visitors at 1-1 throughout most of the game thanks to a fine catalogue of saves from Karl Darlow, but wound up 4-1 losers after three late, quickfire goals from United.

Fans were annoyed with the manner in which Newcastle lost the game and captain Lascelles echoed the frustration, revealing to NUFC TV as quoted by the Shields Gazette that the squad were 'upset and angry at [them]selves' for the way in which they treated the game.

"We started off pretty well. The way the team was set out, and the instructions given, we fancied ourselves," he admitted. “At 1-1, when (Karl) Darlow saved, we thought 'is it one of those days for us?'. But, I think, we pushed on too much.

"We maybe should have realised we're playing against Manchester United, and kind of just shut up shop a little bit more, gone for the draw and looked to counter attack them a bit."

Steve Bruce's side kept United at bay for most of the game and had chances to take the lead again in the first half, despite United dominating possession. Darlow made 14 saves, but ultimately Newcastle lost their momentum let United take the lead with four minutes to play.

The floodgates then opened, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford both getting on the scoresheet in the final few minutes.

Lascelles added that Newcastle were 'too open' and should've looked to see the game out more, but was also positive about the direction the club is heading.

"Since being at Newcastle, this is the strongest team we've had. Our mentality is we need to try and finish higher than we did last year. Our end game is to try and get top 10, if possible."

Newcastle managed a 13th place finish in the Premier League last season and have strengthened the squad with additions like Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick despite a proposed big money takeover bid falling through.

At the weekend they host Everton, who remain unbeaten following a 2-2 draw with Liverpool last Saturday.
