Every UEFA Super Cup - Ranked

23 September 2020 23:15

The UEFA Super Cup. The Community Shield of European football.

While there is a certain divide within football discourse over whether such silverware are worthy of being deemed as trophies or not, it doesn't prevent the occasion from being a feast for the eyes.

Winners of the Champions League against the winners of the Europa League? That'll do nicely.

With the occasion having taken place since way back in 1973, in order to do this ranking without boring everyone to death, we've limited it to when the Super Cup became a one-legged affair, back in 1998.

22. Barcelona 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk - 2009

Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic started as the Barcelona front three.

It took them until the 115th minute to score and secure a 1-0 win. Boring.

21. AC Milan 1-0 Porto - 2003

In front of 16,000 adoring fans, Andriy Shevchenko's goal settled the tie. Porto would win the Champions League the following season.

Check out the highlights for a short-haired Filippo Inzaghi.

20. Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea - 1998

The first edition of the Super Cup where it was permanently changed to a one-legged affair, Gus Poyet's 83rd minute goal separated the sides as they secured a surprise win over the Champions League winners.

19. Barcelona 2-0 Porto - 2011

One of those matches that was a foregone conclusion even before a ball was kicked, Lionel Messi's first half strike was added to by Cesc Fabregas in a game that will go down in history as having happened.

18. Lazio 1-0 Manchester United - 1999

Lazio secured a win few thought they would in the 1999 Super Cup, with Marcelo Salas' 35th minute goal being enough to beat a Manchester United side featuring the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane.

17. Real Madrid 3-1 Feyenoord - 2002

A Steve McManaman inspired Real Madrid had won Madrid the Champions League final, but he played no part on this occasion as his teammates eased to victory over their Dutch opponents - who had Blackburn legend Brett Emerton in their ranks.

16. Valencia 2-1 Porto - 2004

Porto had just stunned the continent by securing the Champions League, but they were undone on this occasion by a goal either side of half time by Valencia, with Ricardo Quaresma's late strike setting up a tense finale.

15. Real Madrid 2-0 Sevilla - 2014

It wasn't an overly easy task for Real in 2014, but one Cristiano Ronaldo did the business with a brace in Cardiff to see off their plucky La Liga rivals.

14. Galatasaray 2-1 Real Madrid - 2000

GOLDEN GOAL!

Two penalties in regular time? Boring. A golden goal winner for the underdogs in extra-time? We can get on board with that. And, of course, it was Mario Jardel who scored it.

13. Atletico Madrid 2-0 Inter - 2010

Despite having the best striker in Europe that season, Inter were unable to impose themselves on Atletico Madrid in 2010, being put to the sword by Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Aguero in an all-action encounter.

12. Zenit 1-2 Manchester United - 2008

They may have won the final in Moscow, but Russia wasn't United's friend in the Super Cup as Zenit scored either side of half time to stun the Red Devils, who grabbed a late Nemanja Vidic consolation.

11. AC Milan 3-1 Sevilla - 2007

Sevilla and their Malian front two were good value for their first half lead over Milan, but Carlo Ancelotti's side turned on the style in the second period.

Inzaghi got them back on terms, with Marek Jankulovski and Kaka adding the second and third efforts to seal the deal.

10. Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester United - 2017

A dominant Madrid deservedly took a two-goal lead via Casemiro and Isco, only for a fumbled save from Keylor Navas to tee up Romelu Lukaku to offer United a lifeline.

It was one they looked like taking in the dying stages, only for Marcus Rashford to fluff his lines when one-on-one.

9. Liverpool 3-2 Bayern Munich - 2001

Racing into a 3-0 lead before half time, Bayern were getting torn apart by a Michael Owen and Emile Heskey strike force. They regrouped after the break to bring themselves within one goal of extra-time, but a dogged Liverpool held on to secure a memorable victory.

8. Liverpool 3-1 CSKA Moscow - 2005

It was set to be an upset with less than ten minutes on the clock, only for substitute Djibril Cisse to haul his side back into it. With Liverpool having a knack of scoring three goals after being behind in European competition, Cisse scored another in extra-time with Luis Garcia rounding off the comeback win.

7. Sevilla 3-0 Barcelona - 2006

More for shock value than anything else, Sevilla's stunning display in 2006 shocked all watching on, as they triumphed over Barcelona with a thoroughly deserved 3-0 win.

Scoring at all the right times, they left a star-studded Blaugrana side looking considerably average.

6. Atletico Madrid 4-2 Real Madrid - 2018

When a goal gets scored before 60 seconds come on the clock, it tends to set the tone. In 2018, consider the tone well and truly set.

Madrid fought back from that setback to go 2-1 in front, but Diego Costa once again dampened their hopes. In extra-time Atletico turned it one with two goals inside the first 15, to seal a famous win over their rivals. Payback, if you like.

5. Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea - 2019

Simply for the fact it was the first all-English Super Cup final, people expected a tense affair. Liverpool were, by all accounts, the better team, but their clash came down to a case of two penalties.

With the Reds leading 2-1 in extra-time, Jorginho netted an equaliser from the spot. Into penalties it went. Nine spot-kicks were converted before Tammy Abraham stepped up, but the striker saw his saved to spark jubilation in Jurgen Klopp's camp.

4. Atletico Madrid 4-1 Chelsea - 2012

This wasn't a fantastic encounter with two sides going toe-to-toe. That's not why it was memorable.

It's fondly thought of as the Falcao final, where the Colombian scored a superb hat-trick to obliterate the Champions League winners. His three first half goals were of the highest quality. Worthy of a good spot on this list for them alone.

3. Real Madrid 3-2 Sevilla - 2016

Heartbreak for a Sevilla side who were within a whisker of firstly victory, then penalties. With just three shots on target all match, two of them were converted (one from the penalty spot) to put them seconds away from a famous 2-1 victory.

Sergo Ramos popped up - as he does - in the 93rd minute to force extra-time, then Dani Carvajal broke Sevillanos hearts with a 119th minute winner.

2. Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea - 2013

For drama, you need look no further. Bayern had THIRTY SEVEN shots in this match to Chelsea's, less impressive, 14. No less than 19 on target for Die Roten and nine for the Blues.

So that fact that it took until the 121st minute for Javi Martinez to drag his side into a penalty shootout after mad encounter is baffling. Eden Hazard had previously put Chelsea in front for the second time just three minutes into extra-time.

Romelu Lukaku missed the all-important penalty that saw the Germans reign supreme.

1. Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla - 2013

It can only be, right?

Sevilla were trailing 4-1 in this tie heading into the 57th minute, where one of the best comebacks in their history was oh so nearly completed. Somehow finding the energy to haul themselves back on level terms, the game went to extra-time.

A wonderfully engrossing encounter was finally decided by the pre-match favourites, as Pedro netted the crucial winner five minutes from time.

One for the history books.
