Callum Wilson Joins Fellow Summer Signing Ryan Fraser on Sidelines With Hamstring Injury

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson limped off the field on Friday night with a hamstring injury in a 2-0 loss against high-flying Southampton.

Wilson was substituted in the 78th minute, as he joined former Bournemouth teammate Ryan Fraser on the Magpies' injury list.

A rather sombre Steve Bruce talked about the striker's injury, saying as quoted by the Chronicle Live: "It is a hamstring and we don't know how bad it is yet. He needs a scan."

While at first glance Wilson's problem didn't look too severe, the Newcastle fans will be waiting with great anticipation for the results of the scan. The forward has become a crucial part of the Magpies' team, already netting six league goals this season and scoring both in a 2-1 win against Everton last Sunday. The striker's absence could be a significant one if the strain is worse than initially feared.

Newcastle haven't enjoyed the best of weeks since that Everton result. It was revealed that Ryan Fraser's hamstring injury from training was, in fact, a small tear, resulting in his absence from the Scotland squad for the upcoming international fixtures.

The international break has come with impeccable timing for the Magpies. The break will allow the squad to regroup after a poor showing against Southampton, while also allowing time for Wilson and Fraser to recover.

The former Bournemouth duo have started life on Tyneside very brightly, already using their past knowledge of each other to great effect, linking up to grab the winner against the Toffees on Sunday.

However, it is Wilson's return that will especially be a priority for Bruce before the return of domestic football. Without the summer signing, Newcastle's goalscoring resources are significantly depleted and they face stern tests before the end of the month, as they host Chelsea on 21st November before travelling to Crystal Palace a week later in the Premier League.
