Hiddink: I couldn't rest Lampard

Guus Hiddink admitted he could not contemplate resting Frank Lampard for Chelsea's clash against West Ham, as the Blues won 1-0 at Upton Park.Lampard was abused by the fans he left in 2001 and missiles were aimed at him after Salomon Kalou's winner, but he had the last laugh as Chelsea warmed up for Tuesday's clash against Barcelona with a win over Gianfranco Zola's men.Hiddink had Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Michael Ballack on the bench but Lampard was a player he simply could not ask to rest."I have rested some players but if I had suggested that to Frank, well, I didn't even talk to him about it," Hiddink said. "He would have looked at me as if to say, 'Why are you doing that?' These guys with big personalities, they want to play every game."Maybe some time in the near future I will have to tell him he's not going to play, but without looking at him I think."Zola sympathised with his former team-mate."It's a long story," Zola said. "They didn't forgive him for leaving. Frank is a very good professional, a very good boy and it makes me sorry to think he has a problem with this crowd."Lampard set up the 55th-minute winner with a floated cross. It then needed Petr Cech to save Mark Noble's penalty to keep Chelsea ahead."It's not a confidence boost for him (Cech)," Hiddink added. "He showed against Everton this week, he made some good saves there too."We don't deny that he had difficult times before but when a goalie makes decisive saves then it's good for him."Hiddink has vowed to take the game to Barcelona when they play in midweek."It's not chess," he said. "With that, you have systems to attack or defend. Football is more complicated than that."We should not go there and drop back, wait and wait until the storm is coming."We must take what is in our team and do some harm as well. That is always our intention in big games. If we wait, we will have problems."Zola, meanwhile, was pleased to have Kieron Dyer back for his first start since August 2007.Dyer was played as a defensive midfielder but had West Ham's best chance of the first half, Cech saving when he raced through."He applied himself well and had to work harder than normal. It's another step forward for him," said Zola, who signed a new contract until 2013 after the game."He had a great chance. It was a great ball to him. It went to his left which is not his best foot but Petr Cech made a good save."
