Northampton manager Ian Sampson hopes to have a new left-back at Sixfields by the end of next week.
Sampson saw first-choice Peter Gilbert miss a deadline to sign a contract this week but is confident of tying down another player in the coming days - as well as a loan signing.
He said: "I`ve got a call to make and fingers crossed we will have a lad coming in on loan from a Championship club next week.
"We should also have a left-back signed permanently by the end of next week as well so we are getting there.
"It would have been nice to get all our signings sorted by July 1 when we we were back in training.
"We thought we had that pretty much done but matters materialised and it wasn`t to be but we are nearly there."
