Irvine rues lack of goals

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine acknowledged that a lack of goals had cost his side not only in their final-day shoot-out with Crystal Palace, but also throughout the season. The Owls were relegated to League One after drawing 2-2 with the Eagles, missing out on the win they needed to stay up and spell the end for their opponents. They twice got back on terms thanks to Leon Clarke and Darren Purse, but missed a host of other chances, leaving Irvine to put his finger on why they went down. He said: "If you look at the league and see how many goals people have scored, it will quite often tell you where the teams finish. We've missed a lot of chances in a lot of games. Probably since the Reading game there's been a lot where we should have got more than we did. "Again today (Sunday) we've had more than enough chances to win the game." Irvine, who revealed Clarke had to be substituted after dislocating a toe while celebrating his goal, added: "A lot of decisions have to be made and there will be changes, there is no doubt."
