SWP foresees Euro spark

Shaun Wright-Phillips believes it could be the start of something special if Manchester City can claim Uefa Cup glory this season. The Blues have reached a European quarter-final for the first time since 1979 and face Hamburg for a place in the last four. That has raised hopes of a first major trophy in 33 years for the long-suffering City fans, who have followed their side from the very start of this season's competition.Mark Hughes' men started out in the first qualifying round and have needed penalties to get past FC Midtjylland and Aalborg.Taste of successWright-Phillips feels that has fostered a winning mentality amongst the youthful City squad and reckons going all the way could spark a golden era for the big-spending Blues."Once everyone gets a taste of one trophy, it could set off an effect," he told the Manchester Evening News."People will get the hunger, and just want more and more."To win it would be a step in the right direction, especially with all the games we have been through."We have made it hard for ourselves but when our backs have been against the wall we still seem to come out on top."Local rivals United have enjoyed a glorious spell over the past 15 years and although Wright-Phillips reckons the Blues could one day challenge the Reds for honours, he insists it will take time. And the 27-year-old may still be around if and when that happens as he is considering playing out his career with City having rejoined the club last August after a disappointing three-year stint with Chelsea.Potential"It's unlimited how far the club could go with the people around it and the people in charge, including the boss," he said."We could go a long way for a long time. It's possible, but to get to the heights United get is something that might happen in my time or way after."I do think we will be able to challenge them for the league, but everyone has to be patient."I see myself staying for a long time, but it's the club that says 'yes' or 'no'," he added."I can't see myself going anywhere. If the opportunity came to stay for life, I could quite honestly say I would. I am very happy here."
