Paul Gascoigne in Newcastle hospital after car crash

Sad day: Gazza at a service to remember his former manager Sir Bobby Robson in September 2009Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after being involved in a car crash on Sunday night.The former England midfielder is being treated at Newcastle General Hospital where he is believed to be in a comfortable condition.Gazza, 43, was not driving at the time of the accident which happened at Sandhill, Newcastle, near the city's Quayside, and a 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.The incident, involving a Vauxhall Astra, happened at about 9.45pm,when it is believed the car left the road, striking a nearby signpost.Theambulance service confirmed they were called to the scene and fourambulances were sent to assist the driver and three passengers.   Two men, including Gazza, and the female driver were taken hospital for  treatment.A spokeswoman for Newcastle General Hospital said: 'He is in hospital and he  was brought in following a car accident. Enquiries are ongoing.'Gascoigne, who also starred for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers, has endured a spectacular fall from grace since hanging up hisboots in 2004.He is due to stand trial in late July accused of driving while more than four times over the limit in February.He pleaded not guilty to the drink-driving offence and also denied driving without insurance during an appearance before magistrates in Northallerton, North Yorkshire earlier this year.Witnesses said the car Gazza was travelling in came hurtling around a corner, lost control, and smashed into a taxi rank sign. Arrest: A 36-year-old women has been arrested as a result of the accident The car had mounted the pavement then smashed into a sign whichstands next to the Guildhall, just yards from the iconic Tyne Bridge.Lloyd Roberts, 23, a barman at Chase bar, said: 'I didn't see the actual crash happen but I saw all of the aftermath.'The taxi rank has been totalled so the car must have been going really fast. People have told me it was probably doing around 90mph.'The woman driver was pulled from the car and was lying on the pavement. 'I saw Gazza being taken from the back seat and put on to an ambulance stretcher. He was strapped in and had head support. 'I didn't see any injuries or hear him speak to anyone. He was put into the back of the ambulance and a police officer was talking to him for a little while.'   Joyce Wemyss, manager of Redhouse pub, said: 'I was working in the bar at around 9.45pm when I heard a massive screeching sound.Highlight: Gazza during his playing days at the 1990 World Cup in Italy'I looked out of the window and a car was hurtling around the corner and smashed into the taxi rank pole.'There was a massive bang and lots of people rushed out of the bar to go and help.'The driver was a woman and she was pulled out of the window yelling in pain, she was then lying on the pavement screaming until an ambulance arrived. There was a man in the front seat and Gazza in the back.'The front of the car was completely smashed.
