Return to Darlington was the Wright one

TOMMY Wright has revealed he may have stayed at Grimsby Town if any club other than Darlington was interested in signing him. On Monday the striker tore up his contract at Blundell Park to become Quakers' latest signing, returning to the club he left two years ago but still holds a lot of affection for. The 25-year-old joined Aberdeen in 2008 and, although he had 12 months to run on contract at Grimsby, Wright exercised a clause which allowed him leave due to the Mariners' relegation. I still had a year left at Grimsby and spoke to the manager there three or four times before I made my decision, said Wright who scored 19 goals in 58 games during his first Quakers spell. He understood why I was leaving, if it was any club other than Darlington then it might have been a different story, I could've stayed at Grimsby. But I've got a good feeling about Darlington and the fans played a part in my decision as well. The welcome I got when I played at the stadium with Grimsby at the end of the season was so much better than I thought it would be. I thought I'd get a clap, don't get me wrong, but to be chanting my name was brilliant and I ended up getting a lot of stick about it from the Grimsby lads. It's not a secret to anyone that I think of Darlington as a second home and it was such an easy move for me to make. I've been welcomed back straight away and it's a good feeling. He has signed a two-year deal at Darlington, who he first joined in January 2007 from Barnsley when current Quakers boss Simon Davey was in charge at Oakwell. As he gets married on Saturday and goes on honeymoon next week Wright was keen to quickly seal his transfer and he added: I said to the manager that I wanted it sorting out before I go away so that I know where I stand. It was good to get it done and dusted. I know more or less everyone involved with Darlington so that's a strange one for me because it's the first time I've signed for a club that I've played for before. I always look out for the results for every team I've played for. There's been a few so I could sit there all night looking! But I've always looked for Darlington, kept in touch with a lot of the players although most have left. I'm determined to do at least as well as I did the first time around when we got into the play-offs. Former Darlington assistant boss Martin Gray has left Oldham after missing out on the manager's job following an interview. Paul Dickov is expected to be confirmed as Dave Penney's successor later today. Ex-Quakers' skipper Steve Foster has signed for Mansfield.
