WORLD CUP 2010: David James to be England's No 1... but may not be first-choice goalkeeper

Experience: David James has won 50 England capsDavid James looks likely to be handed the No 1 shirt when Fabio Capello names his squad today, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's the manager's first-choice. The goalkeeping issue has been a long-standing riddle for Capello, who maintains he will not decide who plays in goal - James, Robert Green or Joe Hart - until the eve of the USA game on June 12. James, 39, is favourite for the No 1 jersey as a mark of respect for his seniority. He won his 50th cap on Sunday against Japan, and will be the second-oldest player at what will be his third World Cup finals. James wore the No 13 shirt four years ago, behind Paul Robinson, and No 22 in 2002, behind David Seaman and Nigel Martyn. Green and Hart can take solace from the fact that at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Peter Shilton was handed the No 22 shirt - only to play in all five of England's games, conceding just one goal.
