West Ham to let £6m England keeper Robert Green go... but timing of exit won't please Fabio Capello

England goalkeeper Robert Green is set to cause Fabio Capello a major headache by becoming the first major player to be sold by West Ham this summer. Hammers owner David Sullivan wants to negotiate Green's departure from Upton Park as quickly as possible to help reduce the club's £100million debts. But uncertainty over the 30-year-old goalkeeper's club future is sure to alarm Capello, who does not want his players to face any distractions before or during the World Cup. However, Capello's wishes are of little interest to West Ham, who have put every player bar Scott Parker up for sale. For sale: West Ham's England international keeper Robert GreenThe Hammers expect to appoint Portsmouth manager Avram Grant as their new boss soon and want to raise funds so he can build a new team. Significantly, Green is seen as one of the easiest players to sell, and to replace on a budget. New boss: The Hammers are closing on Avram GrantGerman club Schalke 04 have already expressed interest in £6m Green and West Ham have responded by making a £1m offer for Crystal Palace's highly-rated Argentine goalkeeper Julian Speroni. Green would be tempted by a move abroad, with top Premier League clubs clubs already having keepers in place and long-time admirers Tottenham Hotspur withdrawing interest after the resurgence of their Brazilian No 1, Heurelho Gomes. Green has won nine England caps but suffered a mixed season at West Ham, who only narrowly avoided relegation. Fellow England internationals Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole might also leave, while a legal battle is looming with sacked manager Gianfranco Zola. West Ham have not paid Zola any compensation, claiming the Italian breached his contract by making critical remarks recently about the club's owners. West Ham target striker Benitez after Birmingham back out of dealAVRAM GRANT EXCLUSIVE: Pompey haven't paid wages but they love meWEST HAM UNITED FC
