Darlington axe 17 players

DARLINGTON boss Simon Davey has issued his retained list for the 2010-11 season releasing no less than 17 players from The Northern Echo Arena. Davey has today faced the difficult job of telling several Quakers players they will not remain with the club after their contracts expire next month. Defender Paul Arnison is the only new addition to Davey's retained list of players after he today signed a one-year deal. He joins Gareth Waite, Gary Smith, Chris Moore, Ian Miller, Curtis Main and Josh Gray on the squad list for next season, along with youngsters John McReady, Michael Smith and Corey Barnes and new signings Sam Russell, Jamie Chandler and Dominik Werling. The rest of the squad have been told they can leave the club, with three players returning to their parent clubs. "It isn't something I like doing," said Davey. "It's not easy telling someone that they won't be staying at this football club. "There is a lot of work to be done. We need to recruit players and get them ready for a very tough season. That process has been underway for the last month, we've signed some players already and moved some players out of the football club. "The process will be ongoing until July 1. We've been concentrating on next season ever since we came in. You're in the job to play football but it will be nice to give the players a rest, get the retained list ready and be able to look forward to next year. "It's a pity pre-season doesn't last for only two weeks because then we could have got going straight away, but some of the players need a rest and operations." PLAYERS RETAINED, 2010-11: Paul Arnison, Gareth Waite, Gary Smith, Chris Moore, Ian Miller, Curtis Main, Josh Gray, John McReady, Michael Smith, Corey Barnes.
