Cherries: Warren wants to stay at Dean Court
LONG-serving Cherries star Warren Cummings has indicated he is planning to exercise an option to extend his stay at Dean Court. Cummings is one of 10 members of Eddie Howe's promotion-winning squad whose contract is due to expire at the end of next month. But having triggered an appearance-related clause in his existing deal, the Scotsman is entitled to negotiate a 12-month extension. Cummings played a pivotal role in helping Cherries win a place in League One, missing just one of their first 30 games of the season. But following his sending off at Aldershot in January, he lost his place to loan star Rhoys Wiggins and was restricted to just two further starts. Cummings, who was drafted in for Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield, told the Daily Echo: It is more than likely that I will be here next season. I have never thought about going anywhere else, we have just been promoted and I want to be part of a League One team. With the squad of players we have got here, and with the manager looking to get in one or two more, I think we have got a real chance of making an impression in the league above. I am proud to have played for this club for so long and want to play for this club for a lot longer. It is a fantastic place to be and everyone can see we are on the up. As well as promotion, the current board has made a real difference and it feels like a real football club again. Cummings was forced to play second fiddle to Wiggins after the Norwich defender rejoined Cherries for a second loan spell at the start of February. Rhoys played ever so well and I held up my hands to congratulate him and the team while he was here, said Cummings. Losing your place is part and parcel of the game but I'm not afraid to admit that it can hurt when you aren't playing. But I like to think I'm a team player and whatever is best for the team is most important. I supported the team just as much from the bench as I did when I was on the pitch. Lee Bradbury and Danny Hollands also triggered appearance-related clauses, while Steve Fletcher, Shaun Cooper, Alan Connell, Jeff Goulding, Scottie Guyett, Sammy Igoe and Josh McQuoid are all hoping to be offered fresh terms. Boss Howe, who will speak with his players early this week, said: It is a close-knit squad and it has been a very successful squad so I would be loathe to make too many changes. But we will have to bring in a few players because we are going into a tough league so I will speak to the players and see where we go.
