Spurs can target £20million from CL

Tottenham can bank on a minimum of £20m if they get through to the group stage of the Champions League, according to a football finance expert. Television money and participation cash should see Spurs pocket that sum with even more income possible from performance bonuses if they get into the knockout rounds.Simon Chadwick, professor of sports business at Coventry University and who has carried out financial research on the Champions League for tournament sponsors MasterCard, said suggestions of £60million were far-fetched.Spurs' fourth spot in the Premier League guarantees them a place in the final qualifying round of the European competition but they need to get into the group stage to really cash in.Chadwick said: "Tottenham have got to get into the group phase, that's pay-day number one otherwise the income is negligible."If they get into the knock-out phase that's pay-day number two; if they get to the final that's the third pay-day."They should be guaranteed upwards of £20million but to suggest £60million is far-fetched."Last season, when all four English clubs made the quarter-finals, earnings in television money and bonuses ranged from £19.5million for Liverpool up to £32.5million for Manchester United.Gate receipts and merchandise sales also swell clubs' coffers - though they may not be too different from the Europa League - while clubs can also cash in from sponsors. Many sponsorship deals include a premium if clubs qualify for the Champions League, and corporate hospitality can also be charged at a premium rate.
