YES - We all know David Beckham is no spring chicken, but at international level experience counts for a lot more than at club level, and Becks has experience in abundance.
Playing international football can be nerve wracking at the best of times, and on more than one occasion we have seen the event go to a young player's head. Cue Scott Carson and Ashley Young.
You can always rely on Beckham to remain level headed; after all, he's been there, done that, and even bought the Armani t-shirt. Hell, he's probably got it in every colour. Even more importantly, he sets a perfect example to youngsters in the squad on how to conduct themselves when on international duty.
You won't find Becks propping up any South African bars this summer, and the fact Capello wants Beckham with the World Cup squad as a consultant, despite his injury, highlights the value the Italian places on the input Beckham brings to the England cause.
NO - Beckham is past it. His legs can no longer do the work they once so valiantly did.
When you think of Beckham in his prime, your mind instantly plays out the World Cup qualifying game with Greece in 2001. Beckham ran himself into the ground for England that day, something he can no longer do.
He would serve as more of a hindrance to progress than a help. Even when he has been in the squad recently, Capello has only brought him on for five minute cameos at the end of games. It seemed all the England coach wanted to do was help Beckham close in on Peter Shilton's all-time England record.
I'm struggling to remember the last time he made a meaningful contribution in an England shirt; it certainly hasn't been in the last 18 months. We now have a host of wide players at Premiership level more deserving of a cap than Beckham. The likes of Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Stewart Downing, James Milner, Ashley Young and even David Bentley have surpassed the former captain.
It's time for him to give up the baton.
