Having started his career with New York Red Bulls, he became an instant hit with fans, bagging 15 goals for the club, his first coming when he was just 16 years old. Clubs all across Europe were alerted to the young starlet's talents, and Spanish club Villarreal won the race for his signature, paying $10 million for him in 2008. Altidore continued his rapid progress when he became the first USA international to score in La Liga, with a goal against Athletic Bilbao in November 2008. He is also the youngest American to score an international hat-trick, the goals coming against Trinidad & Tobago last year. Altidore has impressed on loan at Hull this season, and despite noises that they would like to keep hold of the American, he has maintained he wants to return to Villarreal next season to fight for his place with the Yellow Submarine.
