It's vital Smith stays - Davis

Steven Davis believes it is "vital" Walter Smith remains at Rangers next season after taking the Scottish champions close to another SPL title. Smith has been unable to buy a new player since August 2008 against a backdrop of uncertainty at the club, with the issue of potential new ownership still unresolved. The veteran boss and his backroom staff have also been working without contracts since January, yet Rangers could retain their crown this weekend if Celtic drop points in their own game 24 hours earlier.Asked whether he wants to see Smith remain at the Ibrox helm, Davis replied: "100% for me. I've thoroughly enjoyed working with him and I think it's vital he stays."It will be a great achievement [to win the title], especially for the manager."I'm sure at times he would have liked to sign a couple of players to freshen things up and boost the squad."He's had to end up selling players and the squad has probably been weakened by that."But we've managed to get great team spirit in the squad and that's something that has shone through this season."The efforts of the playing staff have not gone unnoticed either and Davis - along with team-mates Kris Boyd and David Weir - has been nominated for the PFA Scotland player of the year award."It's a massive thing to get nominated by players who you play against week in week out," said Davis."I know myself when you are picking a candidate that you put a lot of thought into it and see who has impressed you. It's a big thing, really."Despite being one of the top performers in the country, the Northern Ireland international admits he is not even playing in his best position. He said: "I've always said I prefer playing in the middle of the park but this season has been a learning curve for me playing on the right side."I'd never really done it until I came up here. I know the manager likes to play me there because it gives good balance to the side."To be fair, I've been quite happy with how I've done there although I played in the middle of the park in December and I think that was probably my best period of the season."I've been quite happy. I've managed to get a decent level of consistency."There are still parts of my game I'd like to improve on, I've been a bit frustrated with the number of goals I've scored this season, but overall I've been relatively happy."The final nominee for the prize is Rangers defender Andy Webster, who has impressed while on loan at Dundee United this season."My first vote was for Andy Webster," said Davis."Although I haven't played against him this season, I know what he's capable of and I've seen a lot of their games."He has been a massive player and, when he hasn't played, Dundee United have missed him."I think he would probably admit himself, that it couldn't have gone any better for him. The move has turned out to be great for him."Having not played a lot of games, to come in and be an influential player for Dundee United like he has been and to go on and skipper the team says a lot for him."We look forward to having him back and him getting on with his Rangers career."My second vote was for Aiden McGeady, he's always a tough player to come up against and always a handful when you're playing against him."
